& Reformers
What is Pilates?
Pilates is a versatile form of exercise that can benefit people looking to improve core strength, increase mobility, reduce the risk of injury, recover from an injury or having a baby or simply to reduce stress and improve mental clarity. It's suitable for anyone looking to get fit and feel great.
By strengthening the core muscles, abdominals, back, and hips, pilates can help improve overall stability and balance, as well as prevent back pain and other injuries. Pilates exercises are typically done on a mat or with specialised equipment, such as a reformer or Cadillac machine.
In addition to its physical benefits, the focus on breathing and mindfulness during Pilates can help reduce stress and improve mental clarity.
Who invented Pilates?
Joseph Pilates is the man behind the Pilates method of physical fitness. He was a German-born physical trainer, writer, and inventor who developed Pilates in the early 20th century.
He began developing his method while he was interned in England during World War I, using his time to develop floor exercises that would later become the Pilates mat work we know today.
After the war, Pilates immigrated to the United States and opened a studio in New York City with his wife, Clara. There, he continued to develop his method and invented various pieces of equipment, such as the reformer, that are still used in pilates workouts today.
Joseph Pilates believed that physical and mental health were closely connected and that his exercise method could help people achieve both. He developed a system of exercises that emphasised core strength, flexibility, and coordination. Over the years, Pilates has gained popularity as a low-impact workout that can benefit people of all ages and fitness levels.
What is a Pilates reformer?
A Pilates reformer is a piece of equipment used in Pilates workouts. It consists of a platform that moves back and forth on a carriage using various springs and straps that can be adjusted to provide resistance.
The Pilates reformer is designed to help you perform pilates exercises in a way that challenges your muscles and improves your strength, flexibility, and balance. The platform and carriage allow you to perform a wide range of exercises, including leg presses, lunges, and arm exercises.
The springs and straps on the reformer can be adjusted to provide more or less resistance, depending on your fitness level and the exercise you're performing. This makes the reformer a versatile piece of equipment that can be used by people of all ages and fitness levels.

What is the difference between yoga and Pilates?
Both yoga and pPilates are popular forms of exercise that focus on improving strength, flexibility, and balance. But there are a number of key differences:
- Yoga is an ancient practice that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It focuses on physical postures, breathing exercises, and meditation to improve physical and mental wellbeing.
- Pilates was developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. It focuses on strengthening the core muscles and improving posture, balance, and flexibility.
- Yoga typically involves holding poses for longer periods of time. Pilates exercises are more dynamic and involve more movement.
- Yoga classes often incorporate a variety of poses performed on a floor mat, including standing, seated, and inverted poses, and can be practised at different levels of intensity.
- Pilates exercises are typically done using a floor mat or a machine called a reformer, which provides resistance to the body during workouts.
- Yoga incorporates more spiritual and meditative elements, stretching and relaxation. Pilates focuses more on controlled movements and precise alignment.
What is the difference between going to a Nuforma reformer Pilates session and a gym session?
Nuforma reformer Pilates sessions and gym sessions are two different types of workouts that offer unique benefits for physical fitness.
The main difference between these two types of workouts is their focus, customisation, impact, and level of personalised attention.
Nuforma reformer Pilates sessions are a full-body workout that focuses on improving core strength, flexibility, and coordination, and are done using a machine called a reformer. The reformer provides resistance to the body during workouts, which can be modified to accommodate different fitness levels and goals, making it a good option for people of all ages and abilities. The workout is low-impact and gentle on the joints, making it a great option for people with injuries or mobility issues.
Gym sessions offer a wide range of equipment and activities to choose from, including cardio machines, strength training equipment, and group fitness classes. Gym sessions are more focused on building strength, endurance, and muscle mass, and may not always be suitable for people with certain health conditions or injuries.
Gym sessions may be more crowded, making it difficult to get personalized attention from the instructor.
